![]() You can just dig another pit downstream for the water to flow to if you're just making a couple muddy farm plots one time. Doors can be useful as water/magma smashers because they can open/close much more quickly than floodgates or bridges. So you'll need a floodgate upstream, and probably a grate downstream - and then you need somewhere for the water to go. A retracting bridge can also be considered inverted with respect to a raising bridge, when used to allow passage between z-levels, when a raising bridge blocks passage, a retracting bridge allows stuff to fall through. Usually I just use it for creating farmland and for wells (useful in hospitals and prisons), but you can also use it for power generation or mist (makes dwarves happy but pretty risky), or for traps.įor farmland, you need a way to get water into the plot and then back out. The biggest thing you want to plan out is what you'll use the water for. This can however, cause problems, particularly if you have hallways in soil layers in your fortress that can spontaneously be blocked off by a growing tree, so build floors in these. But if you're not ready for that, just build on another part of your starting area. As soon as you breach a cavern, even if you wall it up afterwards, Cave moss, shrubs and trees will grow on any soil or muddied ground in your actual fortress. Starting over in Dwarf Fortress after everyone dies is a time-honored tradition. Just remember, if you screw it up, it's all part of the experience. And if it ends up working fine, then you can mine over and connect back to it and use it. Go build a test reservoir where it won't affect your base and try out the water physics. ![]() Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated) A three step guide:ĭownload DF Classic or install the premium version from Steam or Itch.ioįollow the quickstart guide on the wiki, or see other learning resources (below)Īsk any questions in the ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼ - it's always active See the reasons for our rules here, and please report any problems!ĭF can be intimidating, but we're dedicated to helping new players.
